Wind tunnel tests start
SHANGHAI Automotive Wind Tunnel Center, which can simulate all kinds of driving environments in China and test vehicles' basic standards, officially swept into operation on September 19.
Located in Jiading District, it took more than four years to build the center. As China's first automobile wind tunnel, it claims to be the quietest of its type of similar size in the world. The noise reached 61 decibels when a tested vehicle hit a speed of 160 kilometers per hour.
Almost all varieties of vehicles can be tested in the wind tunnel, whose maximum load reaches 20 tons.
The facility can simulate driving environments from 55 degrees Celsius to 20 degrees Celsius below zero. With a cold cabin testing lab which can reach 40 degrees Celsius below zero, it can replicate almost all the world's weather extremes.
"Currently, we've had test contracts worth several million yuan and the demand is still growing," said Yang Zhigang, director of the Wind Tunnel Center.
Currently, the wind tunnel at General Motors runs six days a week and 24 hours a day. The wind tunnel center at Stuttgart in Germany runs six days a week and 11 hours a day.
According to estimates, Shanghai Automotive Wind Tunnel Center will run five days a week and eight hours a day.
Two months ago, the Industry Base of Shanghai New Energy Autos and Key Components was set up in Jiading.
With businesses such as the new energy automobile engineering center located near the national motor vehicles testing center, Professor Yang confidently said, "Jiading has the opportunity to become a top auto city."
