Nearly 1,000 workers from across Jiading District has showcased, and sharpened their working skills at the annual district-wide vocational skills contest from October 19 to 27.

At the final of the 8th Jiading Vocational Skill Contest, 976 workers participated in 16 categories of working skills.

As a reward, the top three winners in every category will be promoted to higher professional ranking.

In the previous seven  contests, 3,169 workers received national vocational certificates. Among them, 102 were promoted to senior professional posts, and 107 upgraded as technicians.

“After receiving the certificate of middle level maintenance electrician, my salary rose by over 1,000 yuan (US$164) within three years,” hotel electrician Zhang Xing said.

Zhao Haifei from Taizhou in Jiangsu Province works at Shanghai Tongxin Advanced Automobile Repair Co Ltd.

He came to Jiading in 2004 and learnt car repairing skills. In his spare time he took training courses.

Promising future

Last year he took part in the 7th Jiading Vocational Skill Contest and was awarded the 4th grade national profession certificate for automobile repair.

“I hope to pass the 3rd grade this year and 2nd grade next year, and in the future I hope to open my own car repair factory,” Zhao said. He is now a top technician in his company.

The annual contest has been served as an ideal platform for technicians to improve their skills.
