Works of art that play a major role in daily life
SEALS play an important part in the daily life of Chinese people. They need to affix their seals to get their money from the bank, to get their letters from the post office, to sign their contracts with another party, and to exchange official documents at various levels. In Chinese history, no matter how big or small the business, seals always represent credit and commitment.
Seals are also the indispensable companion of China’s calligraphers and painters.
Having finished their work, they stamp their own names with the seals as a marker to prove authenticity. Although it may look small, it is of great importance.
Seal cutting is a traditional carving skill demonstrating the beauty of characters and patterns on materials such as metal, ivory, horn, jade and stone. Seals are often collected or given as gifts.
Shanghai Han Tianheng Art Gallery is currently holding an exhibition entitled “Century of Shanghai Seal Cutting,” showing about 260 works from more than 70 late Shanghai seal cutting artists.
