Xiaolongbao are tasty cause for celebration
The annual celebration of Shanghai’s favorite snack — Nanxiang xiaolongbao, also known as Nanxiang soup dumplings — was recently held in Jiading.
The snack’s fame is spreading around the world, with dumpling shops opening in Asia, Europe, America and Oceania.
Christopher St Cavish, author of “The Shanghai Soup Dumpling Index,” was invited to take part in the festival. Cavish spent 16 months visiting 52 shops to study dumplings, and completed the index as an investigation into their quality.
During the festival, visitors had the opportunity to take a bite of Jiading traditional folk delicacy Luohan rice cake and authentic Bianji rice cake.
Alongside the festival, the Yangtze River Intangible Cultural Heritage Food Exhibition Week was held to showcase delicious snacks from other parts of the country.
They included Wuhu Sijichun snacks and Huangshan hairy tofu from Anhui Province, Wenzhou rice cake and jellyfish from Zhejiang Province, and Godly vegetarian products and Maqiao dried tofu from Shanghai.
A show featuring traditional Nanxiang culture was held at Tanyuan Garden. A poetry singing concert in combination with modern lighting and multimedia technologies was also staged.
