‘You look awesomely handsome,’ New Zealand student tells her Jiading hosts
ALYSSA Madicyn, in newly learned Chinese, told her hosts: “You look awesomely handsome!” when she visited Jiading Experimental High School as a member of a student delegation from the Hauraki District of New Zealand.
She said she was very excited to be able to come to China. “The hospitality of Shanghai makes me like the city more and more,” she said.
Madicyn volunteered to be a teacher at the Jiading school, teaching Chinese students Maori dancing and New Zealand tongue twisters. She also showed hand-painted animal patterns so Chinese students could learn more about New Zealand culture. Before leaving, she told students: “Thank you, bye bye,” in the Shanghai dialect she had just learned.
Wu Jialu, a senior grade two student said her impression of Madicyn was of “a strong, independent woman from New Zealand.” Wu was among those responsible for receiving the New Zealand delegation and she and her mother were looking after Madicyn.
They prepared a number of Chinese dishes for her to try.
“She didn’t refuse but tried all of them, I think she is brave,” Wu said. After dinner Madicyn and Wu discussed their favorite singers, study, school and lifestyles. “You look awesomely handsome,” Madicyn’s special greeting, was learned from Wu that night. Wu gave her a paper fan on which she wrote the Chinese characters for the greeting.
The 15-strong delegation arrived at Jiading on October 2 for 12 days of cultural and educational exchanges. Jiading prepared home-stays for them to experience the local lifestyle and culture, and they visited three high schools in the district.
Jiading and Hauraki became sister cities in 2001 and students take part in exchange programs every year.
