Young volunteers offer help when colleagues reach their old age

JIADING Town organized five teams of young volunteers to provide services for elderly former volunteers last month.

Volunteers are selfless, dedicated individuals with no intention of seeking rewards for themselves. However, when they get old and sometimes ill, they themselves need help, the program’s organizers said, explaining the reason for launching the program.

A former volunteer surnamed Yang at Liyuan No. 1 Neighborhood is one of the beneficiaries.

Yang and his wife served as volunteers for many years. But now Yang has cancer and is bedridden.

His 84-year-old wife Yang Jin’e suffers from high blood pressure and related conditions. The wife needs to go to see the doctor every second week.

Their children often visit them but are not always able to give them the timely care they need.

Under the program, young volunteers accompany her to the hospital and drive her home again.

The volunteers come from Shanghai Volkswagen, which has a team of nearly 100 volunteers under the age of 30. They joined the program for senior volunteers with four other volunteer teams.

The program subsidized by the local government provides 13 kinds of services including haircut, home appliance repairs, air-conditioner cleaning and room cleaning.

Feng Jialin, 88, another ex-volunteer, suffers from knee problems and is unable to walk to the nearest  barber’s.

Now he can call the volunteer center anytime he needs a haircut, using a coupon offered by the program, which entitles him to 20 haircuts a year.

The program plans to train 350 volunteers to cater for 150 volunteers over 70 by the end of the year.
