Youth fitness becomes a way of life
KEEPING fit has become a lifestyle in the district, and more young people are getting out to exercise in Jiading's parks and playgrounds.
At Beishuiwan Community, the football playground is the most popular site. Teams have to reserve playing times nowadays.
"There are two to three football matches a day after 5pm,'' said Gao Hongzhu, who is in charge of the football court.
Jiang Dongying from Gaochao Community in Jiangqiao Town said the community playground there has up to 30 young people playing basketball each day after 4pm.
Jiading has 21 public playgrounds, 12 fitness centers and 422 exercise stations. The district's 46 elementary and middle schools open their playgrounds to the public after school hours. Courts for basketball, football and tennis are the most popular among young people.
To nurture a future generation of athletes, the district actively recruits teenagers talented in table tennis, badminton, swimming and gymnastics.
Take badminton for example. More than 30 students have been selected from about 1,000 elementary school students as reserve members for the district's professional badminton team.
"Two years later, they can attend the city's sports meets," said the coach Zhang Lei. "Three to four kids have shown a great potential.''
The number of students now undergoing sports training has doubled since 2006.
