Zhang's advice on calligraphy

ABOUT learning:

There are three most important things for the young people to learn calligraphy: Correct method, good habit and sustainable development.

A good teacher may not be the best writer, but he or she shall be rational, understanding and good at teaching students according to the ability, personality and age.

Not all copybooks are good to copy at any time. Choose the right one for the different stages of study.

Entry-level copybooks are very important. A new learner should choose the books with clear writing characteristic, neutral style and high technical content.

Good method, diligence and persistence are the three key elements of calligraphy. The right method will yield twice the result with half the effort; while the wrong method will produce half the result with the double effort.

Without a certain amount of copying and the right learning method, you cannot achieve any qualitative change.

With the wrong learning method, more practice means more mistakes, and a bad habit finally formed.

Technique of Standard Script (or kaishu, ??êé)is displayed on points and strokes; Technique of Cursive Script (or caoshu, 2Yêé) is displayed on the connection of the strokes.

A Standard Script calligrapher cannot write an excellent work without the understanding of Cursive Script. Likewise a Cursive Script calligrapher will easily make the work irregular without learning the structure of the Standard Scrip.

About copying

Copying is aimed to change your own writing habits. If you don't want to change your habits, don't copy.

Spending little time on copying or copying in free style is worse than no copying.

Copying is a method, rather than a target. The target is to transform the copybook's style into your own style.

A habits is something you can perform naturally without thinking.

The initial stage of copying is to concentrate on learning techniques.

The higher stage of copying is to transform the copybook's style into your own, which means selecting, summarizing, refining and utilizing these techniques.

Copying is a compulsory exercise while creation is a free action. The former is the foundation while the latter is the goal.

About creation

Never think that writing with a brush equals calligraphy.

Practice is not creation. Never consider your homework as your art work.

Creation is not just copying the characters from the copybook.

A good work needs technique, talent and mood. It's a result of cooperation of eyes, brain, heart and hand, and a combination of rationality and sensibility.

Don't care about what others say about your work. Focus on the art value of it.

Posturing or self-deception can never be considered as one's personality, irregular will never be regarded as one's artist style either.

Although we know that there will be no result without process, in calligraphy, however, the result is much more important than the process.
