Zhuang passes on his skills to carvers of the future
Jiading Bamboo Carving has become an icon of Jiading鈥檚 cultural history. Zhuang Long is one of the cultural heritage inheritors, and he has been teaching the skill of bamboo carving to disabled students at Sunshine Studio in Jiading.
Zhuang started to learn from Jiading bamboo carving master Fan Xunyuan at the age of 18. After 30 years of hard work, Zhuang has become a well-known artist.
To teach disabled students in Sunshine Studio better, he moved his own studio next door. 鈥淚t鈥檚 hard for disabled students to learn this skill, so good patience is necessary for teaching,鈥 Zhuang said.
Most of Zhuang鈥檚 students can now make a living with their skills. Some have even started their own businesses.
Xu Yefei, who鈥檚 been suffering from severe hearing impairment since birth, learned bamboo carving at Sunshine Studio. Because of his excellent craftsmanship, Xu鈥檚 works are in such great demand that customers are willing to pay as much 2,000 yuan (US$313) a piece.
Zhuang also set up Bozhuzhai Studio for fellow bamboo carving enthusiasts to exchange ideas.
One of his recent creations is a bamboo artwork to mark the 70th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People鈥檚 War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.
