2016 Jing’an Style
Innovation:
Key word: International
As one of the most-sought spots for startups, Jing’an is moving steps further, eyeing an international market.
XNode, Jing’an based space and incubator, prides itself as being one of the most international of the shared-work places in Shanghai. More than 60 percent of tenants are expats.
In September, it provided a Chinese launch pad for the Australian government’s Landing Pad program, which aims to nurture creativity and startup companies.
This month, it held China Tech Day, organizing a group of Chinese top geeks to San Francisco to visit world’s top incubators and form partnership.
Another space, People Squared, issues “P2 passports” that give members free access to each of its work-share sites, including offices under its partnership with Google in the Silicon Valley.
NGO:
Key word: Get Everybody Moving
Jing’an is trying to get everyone moving in charity work, and encourages more to think of those who need help just around you.
The district, labeled as philanthropy incubator, has formed various ways of fund-raising for charitable projects to improve the public welfare. Also, there are many activities, like charity ride and charity bazaar.
For volunteers, Daning Community has made a “volunteer passport” for them to record their deeds every time.
Geography:
Key word: Expansion
A bigger and better Jing’an was created last year due to the “strategic marriage” between the central yet small old Jing’an and wide yet rustic old Zhabei. The expanded district is the first ever in the city to span Suzhou Creek.
Art&Culture
Key word: Fusion
Jing’an demonstrates the cultural hybrid due to its landscape.
In the 1920s and 30s, the city was divided into an international settlement, the French Concession and a walled-off area for Chinese residents. Today’s Jing’an encompasses all that history and embraces the mixture of cultures.
Annually, there are a great deal of activities, featuring old-meeting-new and East-meeting-West, like jazz week, book fair and drama festival. It has a global eye and a bold soul as well. This month, Modern Drama Valley became the first in the nation to award the small theater.
Neighborhood:
Key word: Happiness
The district-wide old community renovation has really benefited those who live in shabby conditions in decades-old buildings in downtown areas. Previously, they had to share kitchen and toilets with two or three families.
Health care is another major work.
Communities are integrating the Internet with grass roots medical facilities, providing an online platform for consultations with family physicians and green channels to specialists.
More community clinics are starting to build 24-hour elderly care center. Meanwhile, the elderly, especially those with chronic illness, are educated to learn to take care of themselves. Self-care groups are springing up among them.
