Annual charity event: stepping up for a good cause

NEARLY 300 people from 15 countries recently stepped up to the challenge of a charity race up the 60 floors of a skyscraper in downtown Jing’an.

He Liangliang, 32, a teacher from Jiangsu Province, was first to finish the race up 1,625 steps, clocking just nine minutes and 10 seconds.

“I didn’t expect to win,” said He. “I wanted to be part of this race because it was for charity.”

The second annual Climb for Hope Vertical Fun Run was sponsored by the Jing’an Shangri-La. It raised 81,216 yuan (US$12,175) for the treatment of underprivileged children at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.

Most participants in the contest were white-collar workers, and many expats joined in.

Among them were Jonas Kohns, 28, from Germany, and colleague Maximilian Willeitner, 32. Employees of a furniture production company, they said it was their first vertical run. Kohns finished in 13 minutes and Willeitner in 15 minutes. “I came for sport and for charity,” said Willeitner, who arrived in Shanghai in May and chose to live in Jing’an because he found it such a friendly place.

“It’s convenient to everything and everywhere,” he said. “There are many sports facilities, like gyms.”

Indeed, Jing’an does relish its reputation as a district where fitness and health are part of the ambience.

The district’s current Five-Year Plan promises 10 kilometers of new public fitness trails will be built by 2020.

The district sports bureau has initiated a program to turn emergency evacuation zones in office buildings into sports facilities. The first gym of this kind opened last year in LL Landing Building on Nanjing Road W.

So far, 11 office buildings have been transformed. Equipment in the gyms is easily moveable so that the areas can be used for emergencies when necessary. The annual membership fee to use the facilities is only 300 yuan a year.
