Bringing modern conveniences to everyone
THE Pengpu Xincun Community is a typical old residential complex, where at one point 6,000 families, largely elderly, were living in shabby conditions in 60-year-old buildings.
“In the worst situations, a kitchen was shared by five families and a toilet was shared by three families,” said Xu Bingrong, who was in charge of the neighborhood’s urban renewal.
Authorities are now sweeping away the worst of the past.
In some cases that may mean upgrading existing apartments to provide toilets and kitchens in every home.
If there isn’t enough room in an existing apartment, an additional floor may be added. If buildings are too dilapidated, they will be demolished and new residences built in their place, Xu said.
More than 1,500 families have already relocated to new homes, and over 400 more families will be moved by the end of 2018.
In the latest phase of the project, Xu added, 15 five-story buildings were torn down, to be replaced in the next two years by six residential buildings and one office block for government bureaus.
“We are dreaming of the day when we can move to a new, modern apartment,” said Wu Zhongyi, 77, who has lived in small, musty unit for 47 years. “We can finally see an end to our days of hardship.”
