Canoeists paddle on Suzhou River
NEARLY 300 canoeists from 10 countries, including Iran, Spain and UK, competed in an international canoe marathon held in Jing’an District on April 2. The race covered a 12-kilometer stretch of the beautiful and historic Suzhou River, passing under 13 bridges east to the Waibaidu Bridge and west to the Puji Road Bridge. For the canoeists, it wasn’t just about the competition, but about enjoying the water travel and the beautiful views of historic buildings.
National team athletes Wang Longkui and Zhou Yu won the men’s kayak singles and women’s kayak singles, respectively, while the crown of men’s canoe single was taken by Petro Adam from Hungary. About 400 people joined a rowing machine game at Joy City shopping mall. Six athletes visited Fenghua Junior Middle School and Daning International Elementary School to introduce rowing and other water sports to students and show them how to use rowing machines. “This year, we want to make more residents familiar with the canoe so they can start to like it. We want to popularize other water sports as well, like boat sailing and sailboarding,” said Yu Biao, director of Jing’an Sports Bureau.
