En garde! Jing’an shopping center hosts international fencing event
CHINESE fencer Chen Weihai won the bronze medal for men’s foil at the FIE Fencing Grand Prix Shanghai, held at the Westgate Mall on June 6, the last day of the three-day competition.
Chen had a closely fought battle in the semi-final with gold medalist Alexander Massialas from the US, also currently the world’s top male foil fencer.
They finished the fight at 15-14, still within the first period.
In the final, Massialas made light work of Lee Kwanghyun of South Korea to win by 15 points to five.
Jing’an has held the Grand Prix for 16 years. Jing’an has produced several great fencers, like Wang Lei who won the gold medal at the male epee 2006 World Fencing Championships, and Zhong Weiping who won the gold medal in the women epee team event in the same competition.
Over recent years, to help popularize the sport, top fencers visiting Shanghai for competitions have given lessons to elementary and middle-school students in Jing’an district.
