Expats learn the ABCs of traffic safety rules

A seminar was held earlier this month in the Shibei High Tech Park to teach about 40 foreigners who work in Jing’an the rules of the road.
The one-hour session, organized by Jing’an traffic police and the Jing’an Exit and Entry Administration, was held in English and featured a digital slide show and question-and-answer period.
“Expats in Shanghai like to cluster in Jing’an, but they don’t quite understand our traffic rules,” said traffic officer Wei Wei, who conducted the seminar.
“Topping the list of offenses are e-bikes carrying pillion passengers,” he said.
“Then there are people riding motorized bikes without a helmet, people failing to register e-bikes and people traveling in the wrong direction on the road.”
He hoped those who attended the seminar will pass on some of the information about road rules to other expats.
The foreigners expressed gratitude for the session.
“It was good to get some information because sometimes it’s a bit unclear as to what is legal and what isn’t,” said Briton Izzy Ukooko, who has an electric bike and has often carried a friend on the pillion without knowing it’s illegal.
Another of the participants was Vika Korpusova, a Russian who moved to Shanghai in 2013.
“I don’t think many foreigners in Shanghai know the local rules,” she said. “It was good to have this session to help us understand them better.”
As a result of the session, Korpusova joined a group of traffic volunteers.
Wei said that Jing’an police will host several similar events for expats in the future.
