Fish market relocates
SHANGHAI’S biggest freshwater fish market, supplying about 70 percent of the city’s fish, has moved from Jing’an the Jiading District as part of an urban renewal plan.
The market, originally established in Pengpu Town in 2001, had been a headache for Jing’an authorities for years because of its disorderly conditions and recurring health and safety violations. Local residents constantly complained about vendors who slept at the site overnight and about the fire risk of dilapidated structures and old wiring.
In addition, the market was occupying prime space in a 205,000-square-meter area zoned for science and technology industries.
By the end of June, all the vendors had packed up their goods and moved to the new venue in Anting Town. This month, Jing’an demolished some 13,000 square meters of buildings at the old market site.
