New look for kiosks
TWENTY book and newspaper booths have taken on a brand new look on the sidewalks of Jing’an District.
Unlike the hundreds of red Oriental News Kiosk booths, the new look resembles a huge black glass box, with screens on three sides. The window in the front opens automatically.
Public advertisements and public service information like weather forecasts are on display on two huge screens. People can check maps, find nearby public toilets and even make restaurant reservations. In the future, residents can even pay electricity, water, and gas fees.
“It’s so cool and amazing,” said Shanghai resident Ruby Fan, 27, after buying a newspaper from a booth on the Yan’an Road M. The 21-year-old university student Lin Hengyi, from Hunan Province, was also surprised to see that he can use the online mapping service with the touch screen.
Besides, gadget charging facilities and umbrellas can be borrowed.
Newspapers, magazines and books are still being sold.
“As times change, it’s also time for newspaper booths to develop,” said booth operator Ma Peitao, “I hope it can bring more young people to read.”
