New off-ramp to ease traffic congestion

WORK to add an exit to the South-North Elevated Road will begin this year, Shanghai Planning and Land Authority said earlier this month.
A new off-ramp will be built on the west side, near the intersection of Zhongxing and Changxing roads.
After completion, it will help divert traffic during congested periods on the elevated road and will reduce travel time for motorists driving from the north to Shanghai Long-Distance Bus Station and Shanghai Railway Station.
In 2014, the South-North Elevated Road experienced traffic jams on 100 work days, according to official figures.
In addition, the district government plans to build two new bridges over Suzhou Creek, with construction work set to start this year. The bridges will make crossing the waterway easier and help relieve congestion on existing bridges.
The new Changping Road Bridge will stretch about 800 meters from the intersection of Changping and Jiangning roads to the junction of Hengtong and Hengfeng roads.
The second span, proposed as the Anyuan Road Bridge, is still on the drawing boards. One plan is to restrict the bridge to pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles.
District Party chief An Lusheng said officials have long been working on the bridge plans, and the process became easier after the administrative edict merging the former Zhabei District with Jing’an.
“Building the Changping Road Bridge is at the top of my agenda,” An said.
