New shopping malls offer retail variety
TIRED of browsing the same old treadmill of shops on Nanjing Road W.? HKRI Taikoo Hui is offering a new alternative.
The mall is part of a mixed-use complex, a 50-50 partnership between HKR International and Swire Properties.
It has two floors underground and four above, and hosts about 250 brand stores ranging across luxury goods, designer accessories and beauty products. It also has 45 food and beverage outlets.
Some of the stores are firsts in China, and some concepts here are also new.
For example, Starbucks is operating its first coffee roasting and reserve tasting room outside US. The roaster is twice the size of the one in Seattle.
Crystal specialist Swarovski has opened its China flagship store in the new mall. It features beautiful art installations.
Officials at HKRI Taikoo Hui said the new mall is meant to stand apart from the usual high-end malls and boutiques on crowded Nanjing Road.
The mall also aims to create interactive experiences for shoppers.
The mall supermarket offers cooking classes. And space is provided for “pop-up stores” and temporary exhibitions.
One recent example is an exhibition highlighting Disney’s “Star Wars.” From now through June 18, life-sized “Star Wars” soldiers and storm troopers, and a facsimile cockpit from the Millennium Falcon spaceship will be on display.
The mall is part of a 17-billion-yuan (US$2.5 billion) complex that also includes two office towers, three boutique hotels and serviced apartments. They will open by the end of this year.
Another alternative for shoppers is the nearby Fengshengli.
Unlike HKRI Taikoo Hui, the shikumen-style architecture of Fengshengli offers historical and cultural themes reminiscent of the popular Xintiandi area.
The complex comprises one renovated old building and nine replicas. It includes global dining chains like Hard Rock Cafe and Goose Island Brewhouse.
