Puppet shows delight local communities
SHOWS of traditional piyingxi, or shadow puppetry, were staged in the Jing’an Temple Community this month by the Wannan Piyingxi Troupe from Anhui Province.
In an old longtang, or Shanghai alleyway, on West Beijing Road, the troupe performed popular stories like “Lady Mu Guiying Takes Command” and “Pigsy Carries His Wife on Back.” Troupe members also showed children how puppets were made and manipulated.
Back in the 1930 and 40s, it was popular for longtang residents to watch piyingxi on summer nights. It’s an ancient form of storytelling that originated in the royal court about 2,000 years ago.
Puppeteers stand behind a paper or cloth screen, manipulating the puppets using wooden sticks.
The folk art tradition was added to the UNESCO Cultural Heritage of Humanity list in 2011.
