Vending machines make shopping for groceries easy and convenient
JING’AN now has 65 grocery vending machines in residential complexes, office buildings, government bureaus and elderly care facilities, according to the Shanghai Commerce Commission.
The machines dispense packaged vegetables, poultry, meats as well as aquatic products. The prices are often as cheap or cheaper than in grocery stores.
They operate 24 hours a day, accepting cash and bankcards, and online payment systems through PayPal and WeChat.
Customers can also choose to pre-order groceries online and then pick up the orders at vending machines the following day. A password is given to collect their purchases.
The machines are operated by Shanghai-based Qiangfeng and E-Cook Times, and by Suzhou-based Fresh Market.
Jiang Feng, manager with Qiangfeng, said his company’s machines offer more than 30 types of products.
“And customers don’t need to worry about safety and quality,” Jiang said.
Products are refrigerated during transport, and the machines are set at between 2 degrees and 6 degrees Celsius to keep them fresh. Every product has a QR code on its packaging, which shows customers its origin and notifies the companies when sold.
The machines offer great convenience to the elderly and to office workers who don’t have the stamina or time to go to markets.
“I am a loyal customer,” said Alice Chen, a white-collar worker on Weihai Road. “I started to use this service earlier this year. Since then, I don’t need to worry about what I will eat when I get home after working late.”
There are 783 grocery vending machines in Shanghai. The first was installed in November 2014, in an office building on Nanjing Road in Jing’an.
More of these machines are scheduled to be installed.
