Autumn harvest and planting are nearly done in Jinshan
HARVESTING, tilling and planting, the three missions of autumn, are virtually complete in Jinshan District.
"Compared with last year, the autumn tasks are almost completed on time, though we have faced many difficulties," says Yang Wenliang, vice director of Jinshan Agricultural Trade Union Committee.
The best period for rice planting had been delayed, causing more than a week's delay in maturation. Heavy rain of more than 40mm in early November caused delays in all agricultural work.
Changeable weather made it difficult for farmers to decide when to harvest because rice is easily mildewed when there's too much rain and after reaping it needs to dry in dry weather and sunshine.
Starting from November 21, the weather improved and work began, but progress was slow. Rice planting is now underway.
Nine towns and one industrial area were assessed to ensure the harvesting, tilling and planting were running smoothly.
Planting was 97 percent complete last week. According to partial statistics from the Jinshan Agricultural Trade Union Committee, 504 reaping machines are operating, including 245 borrowed from other districts.
The district will pay more attention to planting vegetables, Yang says.
The harvest area is only 2.5 percent less than planned and the planting area is only 4 percent less than planned for both vegetables and rice.
The agriculture committee will improve agriculture methods next year to guarantee the quality land quantity demanded by the market.
