Beachside musical bash gets all-clear from weatherman

THE three-day Zebra Beach Music Festival gets underway next weekend, with plenty of beer, bikinis and fun. The weatherman says the three days are likely to be typhoon-free. Wing Tan warms up.

Deep blue sea, a golden sandy beach and refreshing sea breezes will greet visitors to the Zebra Beach Music Festival from next Friday to Sunday at City Beach in Shanghai's Jinshan District.

Organizers have consulted meteorologists to pick the three days least likely to have typhoons, after last year's festival was postponed because of Typhoon Muifa. Emergency plans and lightning rods are in place throughout the beach area.

The three-day, star-studded gala will feature around 20 bands and singers, including the German band Groove Coverage, Mix Market from Japan, The On Fires from Australia and the British pop rock band The Feeling.

Shanghai singer Wang Hao and local bands such as The Honeys and Androsace will rock with stars including Taiwan rapper Stanley Huang and Hong Kong indie rocker Chochukmo, while DJs keep the party going strong long into the night. Each band and singer gets more than 40 minutes on stage during the second summer Zebra festival, organized by Zebra Media.

The shows run from 5pm to 10pm on all three days. Gates open at 3pm.

The festival offers an open and free live house for local musicians to show their talent. Independent recording labels will hand-pick potential indie singers and song writers. Young bands from the city's universities will compete with each other for the crown of Shanghai's Top College Singers and Bands.

Rich activities

In addition, a music classroom will be open on the beach, where professional musicians teach fans how to play guitar and other instruments. They will also give unplugged concerts at night.

Beach, beer and bikini are the key words during the music festival. A wide range of fresh seafood and local treats are available. A series of activities such as the Water-Sprinkling Festival, X-games shows, beach parties and a charity bazaar will keep the festival rolling.

The "You & Me" charity lecture during the gala aims to draw public attention to the need for marine environment protection and joint efforts to better preserve water resources.

Pop stars and rock bands who perform during the festival also make a contribution to the environment cause: their VCRs and autographed CDs and posters will be auctioned.

All proceeds will be donated to Signature, a charity foundation for environmental protection.

One of the highlights is a beach wedding. Brides and bridgrooms will pledge eternal love on a dream-like wedding stage, with the blue sea and sky as backdrop.

One of the brides, Zhou Danqing, vocalist of the rock band Crazy Stream, met her Mr Right, Thomas, at last year's Zebra Music Festival. Festival performers will also play at the wedding.

"Jinshan has a golden beach and the bluewater, which are quite rare for urban Shanghai," Zhang Quanquan, a local government official, says. "In addition, we've got enough experience to hold large events. The infrastructure and tourism service are all in position."

Emergency plans and precautions are in place in case of bad weather, a lesson learned from last year's festival that was postponed by a typhoon. Meteorologists advised organizers which three days would be the best, weatherwise. Experts looked at July weather over the past three decades, looking for dates with the least chance of typhoons.

Last year the Zebra Beach Music Festival attracted more than 100,000 visitors over three days, high attendance for China's beach music festivals.

Single-day tickets cost 150 yuan (US$23.6) and 180 yuan purchased on-site. Those who buy advance tickets through Shanghai East get discounted prices of 120 yuan and 150 yuan, depending on proximity to the stage. There are no three-day tickets.
