Jinshan puts farmers first
THE city's first Farmers' Association has been established in Jinshan District to improve farmers' livelihood, upgrade their scientific knowledge and increase agricultural output.
The first group of members totals 490 farmers in a district that is important for grain production and livestock raising. Farmers represent a large percentage of the population.
The association will provide farmers with many services and information about markets, agricultural products, new standards, better farming and high technology. It encourages farmers to sell to overseas markets.
Members receive a "five ones" preferential policy: one membership card, one low-interest bank loan, one crop insurance policy, one card entitling them to free agriculture lectures and training, and one foundation to be set by the association up for farmers' welfare.
Members can attend free lectures and training sessions by agricultural experts. They get priority in purchasing the latest agricultural equipment.
To raise farm income, Jinshan plans to support 1,000 high-tech farmers, 100 farmers' associations, and 30 model enterprises in agricultural products processing, marketing and tourism, and five famous Jinshan-native agricultural brands within three years.
From the beginning of last year, agricultural experts have presented lectures, demonstrations and training for more than 8,000 farmers. More than 60 were encouraged to join the city's "farmer entrepreneurs" project.
"Setting up the association will help improve the quality of Shanghai's agricultural team and marketing as well as encouraging science and technology," said Yan Shengxiong, deputy director of the Shanghai Agricultural Commission.
"In addition, our farmers will benefit greatly from the association's preferential policies."
