Make sure you catch the seafood celebrations in Shanyang Town
SUMMER is on the way and so is the season of fresh seafood. Shanyang Town, located by Hangzhou Bay in Jinshan District, launches its first four-month seafood festival this month, which runs until October 16.
The coastal town boasts a 1km road along the beach, which features about 10 seafood bistros, and a seafood town opened last year. They have become a popular haunt for locals and city diners. During holidays and especially on summer evenings after sunset, it is packed with gourmands.
A series of events will be held during the seafood fete, which includes a fish-catching contest, a nationwide cucurbit flute competition this Wednesday to Friday, and next month's inauguration ceremony of Jinshan Old Street after its one-year renovation project.
The restaurants on the 1km road provide the freshest seafood caught by local fishermen.
The entire summer along the Shanyang coast is blessed with abundant seafood. In May, locals catch white shrimps, yellow croakers, hairtails, crabs and pomfrets. In June, banshua fish and blue crabs are in season. In July, they get anchovies and mackerel, while in October, sea eels, blue crabs and saury swimming from the Yangtze River are the seasonal staples.
During the festival, the host will invite chefs to give lectures to the public on how to select and cook seafood in a correct way as well as the dos and don'ts when eating seafood together with other food.
The 1km seafood street underwent a face-lift project early last year. The parking space was enlarged, street lamps were installed and the exterior walls were all painted white. In addition, the restaurant sign boards have all been given a uniform style.
Visitors can buy local dried seafood and snacks on the street, such as white shrimps, clams, salted fish and jellyfish, among others, as well as varied fishing tools and equipment.
This seafood street was the destination for the city's diners before the new seafood town was opened. But now the dining focus shifts a little bit to the town, which provides fresh seafood from Qingdao, Shandong Province, Dalian, Liaoning Province, Ningbo, Zhejiang Province and other coastal cities.
The town is set to become the city's biggest seafood market and a high-end marine business and recreation area offering dining, beach tourism and Hangzhou Bay cruising.
"The seafood street is more grass-root style, as visitors can taste some authentic cheap local seafood there, but the seafood town is targeted at a high-end level, which might be good for business feasts," says Jiang Zhuren, spokesman from the local government.
