Shanyang -- The Town of Music
JINSHAN'S Shanyang Town is famous for its traditional folk music and it recently was honored by the Ministry of Culture as a national "town of Chinese folk arts."
Folk music goes back centuries and Shanyang has made special efforts to promote its music and the playing of traditional Chinese instruments such as bamboo flutes, zithers, lutes, horns and gongs.
One in four residents can play at least one traditional musical instrument, town officials say.
Over five years the town has staged more than 100 folk music programs, attracting more than 6,000 spectators. Sixteen amateur bands have been set up, giving more than 5,000 free performances during holidays and festivals.
Folk music education has become an elective in public schools.

Since 2000, the ensemble has performed as a special guest in the Yangtze River Delta Region Folk Music Festival.
It performances of "Surrounded on All Sides" featuring 70 musicians has been staged many times at the Shanghai Grand Theater and the Shanghai Concert Hall.
