A garden full of winter sweetness
Xinzhuang Park in Minhang has long been a popular venue for viewing wintersweet blossoms, and this year a new garden will be opened to give visitors an expanded area for enjoying the annual flowers.
The new Xinzhuang Wintersweet Garden, located on Xinhong Road near the Outer Ring Elevated Road, will feature a collection of the deciduous shrubs from across the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It also has a research center to improve cultivars and experiment with hybrids.
The garden is landscaped in the traditional style of a Suzhou garden, with an artificial lake and pavilions. It is expected to become another landmark in the district.
Some of the bonsai wintersweet flowers are already beginning to bloom. Most of them were relocated from areas in Xinzhuang Park. The garden gives them a more spacious growing environment. When the bonsais are in full bloom, they create a snowy carpet of white.
The garden has a rainwater collection system unique in Shanghai. It resembles a drained pool with aquatic plants. When it rains, the plants absorb the water and any extra is released into the artificial lake, to be stored for dry days.
The system is called “sponge city.” It was devised by local environmental authorities to try to preserve district water resources.
Garden officials said Xinzhuang Park is packed with people every February during the annual Wintersweet Festival, and the new garden is expected to ease some of the burden on the park.
