Accidents in the home kill boy, cause injuries to several tenants

MOST accidents occur not on the streets or in waterways but in the home.

In two recent residential mishaps in the Minhang District, a five-year-old boy was killed and three other people injured.

The first incident occurred in a six-story building in an residential complex on Zhonghuamei Road. Neighbors called the fire brigade as soon as they saw black smoke billowing out of a window, but the fire engine was delayed by up to 15 minutes because it couldn’t navigate a narrow roadway jammed by cars parked on both sides.

A young boy, the only one in the apartment when the fire broke out, was rescued by firefighters in a critical state. The arrival of an ambulance was also delayed. The boy later died.

“Private cars were parked along both sides of the narrow Zhonghuamei Road, so that neither the fire engine nor the ambulance could drive in,” said a witness surnamed Wang. “We saw firemen carrying equipment and rushing into the complex, but apparently it was too late for the boy.”

The boy’s family said the lad had been left alone at home after being picked up from kindergarten.

“At around half past four, we left home to run some errands,” said the grandfather. “We thought we wouldn’t be gone long.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Another accident involved a gas blast at the Pangenglang Unit in Huacao. The accident occurred in an apartment on the second floor of a three-story building in the early morning hours.

The door and several windows in the apartment were blown out and a wall collapsed.

Three people were rushed to hospital after the explosion. None was in serious condition.

The owner of the apartment, surnamed Ye, said he rented the premises to a group of 10 migrants.

“I suspect that the tenants were using a liquefied gas cylinder and it leaked,” he told authorities.
