Advice to job-seekers: Sharpen your skills, don’t bring mom to interview

THE Xinzhuang Industrial Zone is seeking to recruit more skilled technicians as companies shift their focus from assembly lines to product services, research and development.

At a recent job fair held by the zone at Xindu Plaza, 67 companies sought to fill more than 200 positions for engineers, researchers and managers.

In the past, the zone mostly hired blue-collar workers for production lines. That emphasis has been changing as more corporate headquarters have moved into the zone.

One company, Daikin AC, said it is seeking certified technicians and mechanics. Even maintenance workers must have an intermediate electrical maintenance certificate.

Many job hunters, including those newly graduated and lacking experience, are finding the skills bar too high to surmount.

“I still don’t have all the certification they require,” said He Wei, a graduate from Shanghai Normal University. “But I submitted a resume anyway. An internship would be good enough for me just now because it would give me work experience useful in future job hunting.”

More than 1,500 job seekers attended the fair, though only 580 submitted resumes.

Several company representatives said they found it rather strange that some applicants attended the fair with their parents. They said they don’t regard that as a strong point in a candidate’s favor.

One job hunter, who identified himself only as Wang, said he had graduated three years ago and worked briefly as a designer in a small company. He attended the fair with his mother, who did all the talking with personnel staff and filled out all the paperwork.

“I don’t like talking to people,” Wang said. His mother, who preferred to remain anonymous, said she went to the fair with her son because his reticence “concerned her.”

Shanghai Leeya Water Treatment Technology Co., which received Wang’s resume, said it fears that pushy parents will interfere too much in an employment environment if their offspring are hired. The company said it isn’t prepared to take that risk.
