Aerospace Enthusiasts' Center flies high
THE Shanghai Aerospace Enthusiasts' Center recently opened a retrospective exhibition of the city's aviation industry, displaying more than 100 aircrafts.
The show is a "family album" of all the aircraft developed in China since the foundation of People's Republic of China in 1949.
The exhibition includes the Yun-10 passenger plane, the MD82 assembled by the Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Factory and the ARJ21, twin-engined regional airliner, the first passenger jet to be developed and produced by China.
The 150/180-passenger Yun-10, originally known as the "708 Project," came to life in August 1970 and the four-engined aircraft made its first flight on September 26, 1980. Five years later, however, after two models had been built and a third was in production, the project was abandoned because of a lack of funding.
For the following 22 years, China was a buyer, not a seller, of large commercial transport aircraft. The ARJ21, which was rolled out in 2007 and had its maiden flight last November, is China's first step toward fulfilling its ambitions in aircraft manufacturing.
A film of the plane's maiden flight can be seen at the exhibition.
Next month during the Minhang Science and Hi-tech Festival, a series of lectures on China-made commercial aircraft will be held and senior pilots will be invited to talk.
