An even bigger reason to enjoy the culture park

THE 26-hectare second phase of the Minhang Culture Park has been opened to the public, providing a new getaway for people seeking some weekend relaxation time.

The park expansion, about the size of 36 soccer fields, comprises a central square, a riverside forest and a garden-enclosed lake.

The forest and garden are the two highlights of the second phase, reconstructed from the original outer-ring forest. More than 10 varieties of aquatic plants have been planted, not only to please park users but also to cleanse the water.

On land, magnolias dominate the scene. Park officials said the trees will offer the “earliest spring in Shanghai” to visitors every year. Magnolias are Shanghai’s official flower and the earliest blooming flower in the city.

The park also features flora with ornamental fruit to provide a burst of color every autumn.

The park’s newest addition is designed to provide tranquil pleasure to people of all ages. There is a fitness area for seniors and a playground for children. Performances and flea markets can be staged in the central square.

The first phase of the park opened last summer to much public delight. Although most of the trees in that phase are still in the sapling stage, the area has become popular with local residents.

“It is really big and not as crowded as other parks on weekends,” said Ray Pei, a local resident. “It’s a comfortable place to have a picnic.”

Park officials said construction of the third phase of the park will be finished later this year. The fourth and final phase is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015. The two remaining phases will cover an area slightly smaller than the present ones.

The park is part of the Minhang District’s greening program, which seeks to create a pleasant and ecological living environment for residents.

About 50,000 square meters of greenery will be planted on rooftops this year, and new greenbelts totaling 50 hectares are in the planning stages, said the Minhang District Greenery and Urban Management Bureau.
