Art film fizzle with the public

XINZHUANG Premiere International Cinema was the only venue in Minhang to participate in the new Shanghai Art Film Alliance, and it wasn't an auspicious start.

On July 8, the cinema screened the film "Don't Expect Praises," a Chinese independent movie that was nominated at the 63rd Berlin Film Festival. Only one ticket was sold.

In fact, all five art films shown in July received a pretty cold welcome. Some played to an empty house.

By contrast, ticket sales for art films screened at cinemas in the downtown Xuhui District were robust.

"The art house film market in Minhang needs to be cultivated," said Gu Rongsheng, a manager at the Xinzhuang Premiere International Cinema. "Efforts need to be made to promote what is normally a thriving movie art form."

Shi Yun, a local film enthusiast, said that he prefers commercial films to art movies, which he finds hard to understand.

"Blockbusters never bore me," Shi said. "Art films are not my style."

Still, Gu remains upbeat.

"If we don't nurture an audience for art films, we'll never have them," Gu said. "We need to shoulder the responsibility and make the market grow."
