Authorities swoop on illegal pork operation
URBAN management authorities in Huacao Town recently raided an illegal underground pork company peddling unlicensed meat on the border between Minhang and Jiading districts.
The operation had been in existence for more than a year. Despite previous crackdowns, it kept re-emerging in shifting locations. The raid last week occurred at 3am at the Huajiang Road Bridge. A van there was stopped and 1.5 tons of pork confiscated.
Pork not sold by licensed slaughterhouses is considered suspect where quality is concerned.
Sometimes the meat comes from pigs that died long before slaughter. Authorities said they had received public report about the illegal operation and filthy smells around the bridge.
The illegal meat was apparently sold to a wholesale grocery market in the Jiading town of Jiangqiao.
“The pork was sold inside the van to dodge detection,” said Li Feng, deputy director of the Huacao Town Urban Management Team. “When we seized the van, the vendor threatened to jump off the bridge.”
Now there are nightly patrols along the bridge to prevent any reappearance of the illegal traders. “We will urge the food safety office to investigate this underground racket more thoroughly, or else the vendors will just move to some new location,” said Li.
