Awards honor the common man
A shop owner, a school headmaster and a senior citizen activist were awarded the Common Star for their contributions to the district.
Wu Jianwen, a lighting store owner in Jiuxing Village, Zhang Renxing, headmaster at Huaboli-Xinghang Primary School, and Xue Shuzhong, a member with the Seniors’ Association of Gumei Community were selected in an online ballot from among 52 finalists for the award.
“I am grateful that people think I’m making a contribution to the community,” said Wu. “It is a great encouragement to me.”
Wu’s company, the Shanghai Jingcun Lighting Co, has won an award as the best store in Jiuxing Village for more than 10 consecutive years.
Zhang was cited as a tireless worker on behalf of equality in education. Many students at his school are the children of migrant workers, and Zhang has worked hard to make sure that they get the same education as all other students in Minhang.
“They live in Shanghai, so they have a right to the same education as everyone else,” said Zhang.
Xue, a retiree, has long been a volunteer in the elderly community. His theory is: “relatively young seniors serving relatively older ones.” It’s a catchphrase that has caught on.
“I don’t think retirement means you need to sit home and do nothing,” said Xue. “You still have experience and wisdom to contribute.”
Other candidates who polled well in the award contest were Zang Ningbei, a theater worker who gives free drama lessons, and Zhou Lei, a volunteer devoted in animal care.
The first Common Star competition was held in 2013, and was so well received that organizers have decided to keep it going.
