Better community, family health care

MINHANG has established a family doctor system and opened more community health centers as part of efforts to improve medical care services and ease cost burdens for patients.

The general practitioner system offers primary health care for 900,000 residents in 500,000 families. It includes regular home visits and an appointment system for outpatient services.

"I have diabetes and high blood pressure, and my GP comes here to my home to give me prescriptions and measure my blood glucose," said a Hongqiao Town resident surnamed Song, who declined to give her full name.

District health authorities said family doctors in the program come from 13 local community health centers. Their salaries and bonuses are directly tied to the quality of services they render.

Meanwhile, the district is improving treatment levels in community health centers.

Many residents have complained about poor quality services but loathe to take minor ailments to big hospitals too busy to see them.

District health authorities are urging hospitals to share some of their medical skills with community doctors.

Examination rooms have been set up in the centers, where consultants from hospitals can come to do diagnoses.

The cost of treatment in a community center is about 15 percent lower than in hospitals.

The Minhang government has issued health cards to migrant families to entitle them to medical care at the community centers.
