Big break for Minhang's star migrant workers
FORTY migrant workers in Shanghai who were recently honored as "National Excellent Migrant Workers" have got permanent residency (hukou) in the city. Three of them -- Liu Xianbao, Xu Jin and Tang Qishuang -- are from Minhang.
Although these three guys think they're just "lucky" -- there are now over 320,000 migrant workers in the district -- their awards were not just by good fortune.
Liu Xianbao now works in the Electronic Appliances Repairing Department of Longbai Community as a director.
He has been in Shanghai for over 10 years. He always puts customer needs first and is very popular among all residents in Longbai community.
Xu Jin is a technology worker in Shanghai Aidengbao Elevator Co and was honored as a "Blue-Collar Inventor." His invention has saved many million yuan for the company and society.
Tang Qishuang runs his own company in Shanghai. Born into a rural family, he knows the hardship of migrant workers very well. So in his company, most of the staff are migrant workers.
In China, you will encounter a lot of inconvenience if you don't have a permanent residency in the city where you work. Before Liu got the Shanghai hukou, he could not enjoy social welfare.
For Xu and Tang to go on business trips abroad, they had to get a visa from their hometown.
"It always took me over 15 days which was really a waste of time because the visa was not for a long term," Tang says.
Their new situation was announced at the award presentation ceremony in Beijing.
"It was nearly at the end of the ceremony, and the policy was announced that everyone with the 'National Excellent Migrant Worker' title can get a hukou in the city he works," Tang says. "I felt so excited about the great news."
