Big tires bounce out for technology

A tire weighing 1.45 tons with a 2.7-meter diameter has been produced in Minhang District -- the first huge tire to go into production domestically.
Developed and produced by the Shanghai Tires & Rubber Co Ltd, the first production line of its kind began operating at its Jianchuan Road base. With a budget of 180 million yuan (US$26.3 million), it shows that the domestic tire-manufacturing industry is ready to share the high-end market of huge tire-manufacturing with leading international companies.
The tire that rolled off the production line this time was made especially for vehicles carrying loads of more than 100 tons and used in the mining industry. These huge tires have long been regarded as the most advanced because of the technology involved and the difficulties of production.
Although many tire companies have been researching the production of huge tires, they have not yet become commercially viable.
The Shanghai Tire & Rubber Co Ltd has been working with universities to develop the techniques and equipment for the production. It has been awarded patents for 10 inventions and 29 other patents, breaking the monopoly of overseas technology.
The new huge tires have already attracted many clients -- nearly 1,000 have been ordered from overseas.
The company is now considering investing in the second phase of its production line to expand capacity.
