Breeding art of crickets

A pavilion exhibiting cricket pots and cricket-breeding containers opened recently in Qibao Old Town, where the breeding of the competition insects goes back centuries.

About 400 pots and containers for water and food are on display at 37 Fuqiang Street. The pots have intricate designs featuring patterns of bamboo, chrysanthemum and plum blossoms - beloved subjects of Chinese poets and painters.

Most of them date back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The oldest piece is from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).

The pavilion is inside the Cricket House, where both cricket displays and live cricket fights are held. Qibao is renown for breeding the fiercest species of crickets.

Legend has it that Emperor Qianlong (1736-95) once stayed in the Songjiang District during a visit to the Jiangnan region, the area in the north of the Yangtze River and officials offered him a tribute of crickets. When the official procession passed through the Qibao area, the horses stumbled and all the crickets escaped to find a new and permanent home.

Admission to the house is 5 yuan (77 cents).
