Bureaucracy now with a romantic flair

Newlyweds are now greeted with an environment befitting happy lovers at the Minhang Marriage Registration Office.

The processing and services have been modified to lend a more congenial air.

The office recently invited two Zhao Shutong, the former director of the training department of China Eastern Airlines and Zhu Haode, a trainer at the Shanghai Association of Etiquette, to help redesign its service model.

Hu Aimin, director of the Marriage Management Department at the office, said services in the past were marred by “too much workload, misunderstandings and lack of communications skills.”

Since 2008, 60,000 couples have held weddings in the office.

Hu said the office has also be handling a large number of applications for “single certificates” since many people have “divorced,” on paper, to take advantage of a loophole related to buying apartments.

The office, he said, has opened a new window especially for “single certificates.”
