Businesses harming the environment are targeted
NINETEEN businesses were shut down with two people arrested recently in Minhang District as part of a crackdown on environmental protection law violations, district authorities said.
The Shanghai Yongfeng Hot Galvanizing Co was one of the shuttered companies. People living nearby reported that the company had no treatment facilities and was releasing waste gas into the air.
The Minhang District Environment Protection Bureau tested the air quality around its plant and found chemical levels exceeded standards.
The bureau ordered the company to stop production until treatment facilities are installed. The company was also fined 800,000 yuan (US$115,982).
Four companies on Guanghua and Yuanjiang roads were also ordered to shut after nearby residents complained about suspicious odors at night.
Residents said every autumn and winter, the night air became smelly and they dared not to go out or open windows.
The bureau found that the four companies were illegally emitted untreated gas. They were altogether fined 360,000 yuan, officials said.
A new inspection system will also be introduced soon, closing loopholes that allowed some businesses to violate the law.
