Capturing beauty on the doorstep
FRENCH sculptor Auguste Rodin once said, "Beauty is everywhere. It is not that she is lacking to our eye, but our eyes which fail to perceive her."
In Minhang, one resident has opened his eyes and seen the beauty that exists in even the most mundane of surroundings.
"Life is full of beauty, but it may easily ignored by us," said retiree Li Weiliang, a shutterbug living in the Xinshidai Jingting residential community.
Li spent 18 months taking photos of the landscape of his residential complex in different seasons. He turned them into videos and distributed them to residents of the community as gifts.
In spring, flowers sprout. In summer, parasol trees provide a perfect shelter from the sun. In autumn, fallen leaves pave the road. In winter, everything is blanketed in white.
Li's photo essay features over 60 species of flowers in full bloom in different seasons. They include cherry blossoms, winter jasmine, peonies and pomegranate flowers.
"Beautiful flowers wither, and only the camera can make its beauty eternal," he said.
This sort of personal photography is not as easy as it may appear. To capture the most magnificent moment in a flower's short life, Li revisited scenes day after day.
Timing is crucial. Li recalled the morning he woke up late, only to discuss that fallen snow had been swept away. He was more careful the next time, waking to an undisturbed blanket of white.
"I hope people who see these photos will treasure our home because it is beautiful."
