Car-free day is not so carefree
THE Minhang District Prosecutors' Office has designated the first Thursday of every month as a "car-free" day.
All the staff are asked to walk, bicycle or take public transport to work that day.
A trial day held on May 3 had "satisfactory" results, so officials in the office decided to fix a monthly date to show support for a low-carbon lifestyle.
Li Qing, a prosecutor who lives in the Baoshan District, said the commute to work takes two hours, or four times the time of driving herself. "I need to take two buses, three metro lines and then walk to the office," she said. "I have to leave home at about 6:30am to make it to work on time."
But she still supports the idea of a car-free day.
Office administrators said they hope the day will encourage staff to look at other ways of changing their lifestyles to become more environmentally friendly.
