Celebrating the National Day holiday!
The one-week National Day celebration, the last major holiday of the year in China, offers a wealth of activities for every age and interest in Minhang as people take a break from school, factories and offices to enjoy the beautiful autumn days.
The holiday begins on October 1, the 63th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
In the old town of Zhaojialou, the first theater-in-the-park performances will be held, using the natural scenery as backdrop.
The outdoor theater, originally created by the Shanghai Theater Academy, will feature the comedy “Dream Back to Zhaojialou,” which tells the story of a traditional family 100 years ago.
If theater is not your thing, try a visit to the Pujiang Rose Park. In addition to enjoying the last flower blooms, visitors will be treated to water games and daily performances by a professional song and dance troupe. Traditional food and beverages from Taiwan and Fujian provinces will be available.
The 2013 Rose Beauty Cup International Model Competition will hold its final round in the park on October 2.
TV viewers crazy about the popular live show “Voice of China” on Zhejiang TV will be able to enjoy a Minhang version as the district stages its own version of the talent show in Qibao Sports Park on October 3. Ten finalists chosen from a “Voice of Minhang” series of competitions in September will vie for awards, with singers ranging across pop, folk and classical music.
The Institute of Caring Autistic Children will also have performers on stage to drum up public interest in programs serving autistic children in Shanghai.
And as a special attraction, several of the more popular members from “Voice of China” will join in the show.
Fans of sports won’t be without something to watch over the holidays. Minhang will be hosting the 2013 Master Tennis Cup and the 2013-14 China Badminton Association Competition.
In Qizhong Tennis Center, the first day of the Tennis Cup on October 5 will be open to public free of charge. A nearby market will offer an array of Minhang traditional cultural crafts, including Zhuanqiao paper-cuts, Xinzhuang bearded knitting needles, Shanghai lacquerware, calligraphy, seal cutting and paintings.
The badminton competition will be held from October 1 to 4 in the Minhang Stadium on Xinzhen Road. It will feature the Shanghai Badminton Team playing on its home field.
For cuisine lovers, Shanghai senior chef Sun Guanheng will appear at the Qibao Culture and Sports Center on October 8. Sun will share his secrets about cooking local Shanghai dishes.
