Centenarians celebrate long life
Two days ago, He Lianfang celebrated her 108th birthday. Her longevity has not gone unremarked. She and fellow Hongqiao centenarian Chen Zhongbo were honored this year on the list of Shanghai’s 10 oldest people.
He, the mother of five, is still active and healthy. Her doctors say she’s as healthy as someone 60 years old. Her 57-year-old granddaughter, recently retired, is taking care of her.
Bananas are a must-have in He’s diet. She eats four to six a day and a whole fish when she’s feeling particularly hungry.
Chen Zhongbo, who was born the same year as He, attended the awards ceremony in person, proclaiming himself to be fit and healthy.
When Chen broke his leg earlier this year, doctors told him to rest in bed for at least three months, but he was up and about again in a month. Chen’s daughter said he catches only one cold a year.
Chen’s secret to longevity is a healthy diet. He usually has eight dumplings, an egg and a glass of milk at every meal. He also takes dietary supplements like fish oil and enjoys an afternoon cup of ginseng tea.
Chen always burns incense to worship Buddha on the first day of every Chinese New Year.
This year, the Daci Charity Foundation founded by Longhua Temple gave Chen blessed prayer beads as a gift.
