Child abuse case goes to court
A child abuse case recently went before the Shanghai No 1 Intermediate People’s Court in Minhang, with a man accused of scalding a baby with boiling water.
The 26-year-old defendant, who was identified only by his surname Lin, faces prison and hefty fines if convicted.
According to court documents, Lin asked a female tenant named Chen to buy breakfast for him in April 2014. When Chen refused, Lin threatened to evict Chen’s family. Later Lin tried to steal Chen’s electric bicycle, claiming that he would sell it to pay Chen’s rent.
When Chen went out to stop him, he rushed into her apartment and locked her out. He then poured boiling water on Chen’s 16-month-old son. The baby suffered burns to the head, face and arms.
Lin’s lawyer said his client suffered a seizure of schizophrenia when he hurt the baby.
Chen’s family told the court that more than 300,000 yuan (US$48,314) has been spent on treatment for the baby and the hospital estimates the costs may rise to 1 million yuan. So far, Lin and his family have paid compensation of only 170,000 yuan.
