China aviation history
CHINA has been actively developing its own aviation industry as part of scientific and technological advancement.
In August 1970, China began development on the Shanghai Y-10 aircraft, which had its first successful trial flights in 1980.
Because of problems that couldn't be overcome without technical expertise from abroad, the project was terminated in 1985. Attempts to forge links with international aviation makers failed in the end, largely because of technology-sharing issues.
In 2008, China decided to go it alone and established Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd, which took the lead in developing large China-made passenger jets and their major components.
The Comac C919 series, the largest commercial airline designed and built in China, will feature 168-190 seat, narrow-body airliners. First test flights are scheduled next year, with deliveries to follow in 2016.
The Comac C919 has the twin advantages of low cost and low fuel consumption.
AVIC is also been involved in the development of smaller business jets.
Building engines for domestic aircraft has been a complex engineering endeavor, requiring large investments, long development periods and high risks.
