Choristers ring in the fall in city theater

THE Boys & Girls Choir of Harlem Alumni Ensemble, one of the best American singing ensembles, gave full voice to their skills and repertoire in Minhang last weekend.

The occasion was the opening of "Golden Fall of Minhang, the 2nd Shanghai Chorus Festival" on the night of October 24 in Shanghai City Theater, which included 13 famous domestic and international ensembles in full cry.

Boys & Girls Choir of Harlem Alumni Ensemble is well known for its unique art style mixing blues and jazz. In January this year, it played a concert at US President Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony and as a result its worldwide popularity grew.

Besides the Harlem, there were six other international ensembles from Germany, Sweden, Italy and Poland performing at the opening.

Six domestic ensembles also made a significant contribution to the character of the evening, including Shanghai Minhang Teachers' Ensemble, Qiangfeng Ensemble from Sichuan Province, Nine Sisters Ensemble from Guizhou and Shanghai Children's Palace Art Group.

Also significantly, it was the first time that Shanghai City Theater was opened to the public. This new theater is in Chunshen Culture Plaza near Xingzhuang Metro Station.

The adjustible stage is one of the highlights in the design of the theater. It can be changed in height and appearance to meet various requirements, such as a platform for a solo performance or an orchestra pit for a grand concert.

It has over 1,000 seats, impressive sound effects and offers good vision for the audience no matter where they sit.

Although the theater is just next to the district library and the youth activity center, the sound-insulation ensures that neither the rehearsals nor the performance will disrupt anybody.

Some of the other playing groups included the Ensemble of East China Normal University, Shanghai Police Officers Ensemble, German Stouxingers Ensemble, Alumni Ensemble, and Krakow University Ensemble.
