Cleaning up waterways a top priority
THE Minhang District aims to clean up more than 1,400 streams by 2020 and create five new parks in the area outside the Outer Ring Road as part of its environmental strategy.
Water pollution has been a serious problem, and a stream in Wujing’s Heping Village is a case in point. The waterway was black and emitted a terrible stench.
Clean-up efforts have restored the stream to clear running water, and bank reconstruction is underway.
The project, when completed in six months, will also include a new greenbelt and walking paths.
Minhang has 1,413 streams and rivers, or 1112 kilometers of waterways. Water testing showed that about a third of them suffered some degree of pollution, including 129 with severe pollution, clogged drainage and other environmental hazards.
The first step in purifying the waterway of Heping Village was the demolition of illegally constructed buildings on both sides of the stream, which were illegally dumping waste in the water, officials said.
The creation of new parks is aimed at opening up eco-friendly green space in the district.
In recent years, Minhang has converted sites in the area outside the Outer Ring Road into parkland. Each park has its unique features, many based on specific flora such as cherry trees. Five new parks are on the drawing board.
The one garnering the most attention is Pujiang Country Park. It is in an area undergoing rehabilitation. The new park is expected to open next year.
