Club spearheads volunteer campaign

The newly established Hongqiao Town Youth Elites Club is a charity tapping the hearts of young people who work in government departments and state-owned companies.
It originated as a 鈥済reen channel鈥 between government departments to improve efficiency and information exchange, but later evolved into a platform for volunteer work.
鈥淢any of our club members from government departments have the ability, the resources and the desire to do something good for society. So why not do it together?鈥 said Chen Jun, founder of the club and staff member of the Hongqiao Investment & Construction Co.
Chen said his inspiration was a small article by the venerable Buddhist monk Master Hsing Yun, who encouraged people to find joy by helping others.
Established in November, the charity organization has so far attracted volunteers from an array of government departments, including finance, public safety and urban planning.
鈥淲e are getting a lot support,鈥 Chen said. 鈥淐olleagues, friends and local entrepreneurs are all keen to join the organization.鈥
Every month, the club will focus on one charity event, with emphasis on the needs of the elderly, disadvantaged children and struggling families.
The inaugural event was held in a home for the elderly last month.
The club sent 36 boxes of milk to the institution and arranged for a psychologist to give a talk on the mindset of old age.
Next Friday, the volunteers will visit Shanghai Children鈥檚 Home to throw a birthday party for a youngster with brain spinal disease. All the residents at the home are either orphans or children with chronic illnesses who have been abandoned by their parents.
鈥淲e do not do it for show,鈥 Chen said. 鈥淲e will celebrate every child鈥檚 birthday.鈥
He said the club will maintain strict criteria for membership and finances. Anyone absent from scheduled meetings three times in a row will be dropped from the roster.
Every donation and membership fee will be listed publicly on the club鈥檚 official WeChat site.
鈥淲e take this very seriously,鈥 Chen said. 鈥淲e want everyone who joins to make a serious commitment. This is not just a social event or a one-off lark. Charity is all continued love and care.鈥
