Comedy, concerts to round out year

THE Shanghai City Theater will stage a comic drama and two orchestral concerts in December to bid farewell to 2011 and herald the coming of the New Year.

The play "Lend Me a Tenor" tells the story of two frustrated actors. After learning about a rich woman searching for two nephews as the beneficiaries of her will, the pair of actors concocts an elaborate deception. They dress up as the two nephews, and then the fun begins and the plot takes unexpected twists and turns. Yes, there's a bit of romance thrown in, too.

The play will be performed at 7:30pm from December 20 to 26. Ticket prices range between 80 yuan (US$12) and 380 yuan.

Kent Sinfonia, the professional orchestra of the County of Kent in the UK, will present a concert on December 28. The program includes "The Blue Danube," "The Tritsch-Tratsch Polka" and a baritone solo from the Rossini opera "The Barber of Seville."

The orchestra was founded in 1962 and performs under the baton of conductor Andrew Lowen.

Ticket prices range between 80 yuan and 580 yuan.

On December 29, Holland's Malando Orchestra will present a concert beginning at 7:30pm.

The orchestra, founded in 1939, will present a pops concert of light orchestral pieces. Conductor Danny Malando is a third-generation member of the founding family.

The performance will blend Chinese and Western melodies, including a performance of Chinese folk songs such as "Nanni Wan" and "Chanson." Among popular Western favorites on the program are "Moon River," "Blue Tango" and "O Sole Mio."

Ticket prices range between 80 yuan and 500 yuan.
